Social Work Supervision
Many social workers and other therapists work in settings where little clinical supervision is available. An important contribution to their professional development is the opportunity to discuss their cases with an experienced supervisor.
Margaret provides supervision in the treatment of individuals, couples, parents and families. As the Clinical Director of Integra for 9 years, an essential aspect of her job was to provide supervision to a clinical staff with a wide variety of education and experience. She learned the value of a therapist-centered approach to supervision.
Beginning with a focus on the therapists’ experience with their work and their theories, Margaret emphasizes the importance of a supportive learning context where therapists’ strengths are recognized and learning is enhanced.
Margaret encourages the therapist to explore factors related to their clients’ experience, the meaning of that experience and also to explore their own experience of the client. Further, if the therapist is interested, Margaret offers theoretical concepts and readings relevant to the case to help to generalize the learning.
Margaret and the therapist work together to deepen and integrate clinical and theoretical expertise.
